I personally would never use Ableton to record live instruments. The way it handles VSTs and samples, drum machines, and plugins definitely lends itself to electronic music.

Pro Tools is much more convoluted and tricky to navigate, but it's super powerful as well and is essentially the industry standard for studio DAWs.Ībleton is most used for electronic music. Logic is super straight-forward with a clean UI, yet it has a bunch of professional tools and a massive stock sound bank. Pro Tools and Logic are both good for recording real instruments. It really all depends on your music style. Ableton - most creative, best writing tool.Pro Tools - best for working with audio.Having said this, I still print down my stems and finish projects in Pro Tools. Takes a bit of time to get your head around workflow etc but WAY more straight forward and intuitive than pro tools. It has TONS of built in sounds, samples, instruments and plug ins. IMO It is hands down the most creative and intuitive DAW of the 3. It's also the industry standard so valuable to know.Ībleton Live - I have the Push 2 and suite. I still use it as the final step of anything I am working on but no longer as a writing tool.

I had to spend a decent amount of money getting set up with something workable here (decent piano plug, waves gold, NI Battery 4). Cons are, very little in the way of built in instruments etc.

Pro Tools - A steep and frustrating learning curve but once you have the key commands down it is the best for editing audio. I personally don't really use it for much more than quickly sketching ideas. Good for beginners and is still used by many even at a pro level. Has a really decent range of stock instruments, synths and plug-ins. Like its name suggests, it is the most logical, straight forward and user friendly. The short answer is, it depends WHAT you want to use them for specifically.

I am currently a user of Logic X, Pro Tools 12 and Ableton Live. Like anything, they each have their own strengths and weaknesses.
